Midnight launch sees SpaceX launch of Astranis satellites from Cape Canaveral

Four satellites for Astranis Space Technologies were eventually launched into orbit by a Falcon 9 rocket after a protracted delay.

At exactly midnight on Sunday, December 29, the SpaceX rocket roared on a due-east trajectory as it blasted off from Cape Canaveral Launch Complex 40 on a delivery mission.

A rare last-minute abortion occurred during the most recent attempt at this launch on Friday, December 20. The next day, SpaceX rolled back the rocket to replace the first-stage booster, calling an early scrub. There was no explanation given for the booster and abort swap.

The veteran Falcon 9 first stage landed for the seventh time on the A Shortfall of Gravitas drone ship in the Atlantic Ocean eight and a half minutes after launch. The CRS-31 ISS resupply mission, NASA's Crew-8, Polaris Dawn, and three Starlink missions are among the booster's prior missions.

SpaceX's recovery ship, Doug, also recovered the fairing halves, which shield the satellites during launch.

Four satellites for Astranis Space Technologies were launched by this Falcon 9 rocket into geostationary orbit, which is more than 22,000 miles above the ground. The ISS, for example, only orbits 254 miles. The most cutting-edge satellites for higher orbits are built by Astranis, according to their website. Sunday's mission is called From One to Many.
Astranis asserts that "one was just the beginning." The four satellites that were launched early on Sunday will offer inexpensive internet, and they're not stopping there.

The business also intends to give the Space Force GPS system future resilience. By 2030, 100 satellites are hoped to have been launched.
